Day 20 - Monday

Our last morning in Kenya and the start of our journey home. This morning I snapped the sunrise out of hotel window. The market traders hadn't started yet but it wouldn't be long before Moses, Richard, John and all the others out there trying to carve an income out of selling souvenirs at any price to generate, come out and flock to all of the passing tourists that drive through Nakuru.

During our breakfast we took the time to write on each others team sheets, I don't really know what to call them, but during our team building weekend we all drew a self portrait and then everyone wrote something around the picture. This morning was part two of this process with everyone writing another comment on the back. Apparently there wasn't enough space on mine so I have an extra side and a half. I haven't read mine yet. I am sure it will make me emotional reading it so I'll take some time to read it later.

A last chance to do some shopping after breakfast, I popped along to the scout shop, of course, to see if I could get a couple of things, and whilst the description of the shop said it was fully stocked I was a little skeptical. I was happily proved wrong and they had everything I wanted so a very happy bunny!

Back at the hotel and we had a little impromptu investiture ceremony for Sam and Doug who have now turned 18 and are now adults in scouting. They loved being invested in Kenya with a white Kenyan necker, some people call them scarves.

Then on the bus for the drive to Nairobi. The roads on this stretch are really busy single lane roads. Overtaking is an art form here! There are these large coaches that fly along the roads. They are so fast and flyout to overtake multiple vehicles at a time.

I grabbed some photos of some more delivery vehicles that are really common here too. Oversized loads are so ridiculously frequent on these roads.

Our first stop is at a service station called Delamar where we could stop for a snack. I love the meat samosas that are being sold here. Over the years I have eaten so many samosas from this stop usually on the northbound and southbound trip. I had offered to give the kids lunch money with anyone that didn't take it would be donated to Walter's orphanage in Nairobi. None of the kids or staff took the money and actually lots of them gave some more at the end of dinner.

Next stop on our journey, was the rift valley. This is the plain where Kenya and some of East Africa is slowly moving away from the rest of Africa. The view here is spectacular, some of the decked area is a little soft and the toilets are situated further down the valley.

Then on to Nairobi. Traffic here is obviously busier but the road expands to multiple lanes still littered with speed bumps to control traffic. I guess it is marginally better than the roundabouts around Chichester!

Dinner at Fogos is always a real treat for a final meal. The meal starts with a getting a selection from the buffet followed by being served a ridiculous amount of meat. I popped into the kitchen to get a photo and was happily adopted by the team.

We exchanged our busy gifts at this point, along with our team sheets. We had a collection for our drivers, who have looked after us so well for these last two weeks.
Henry stood up and said a few words and quoted the following versus from the bible.
1 corrinthians chap 15 v58
2 corrinthians chap 9 v9
Galatians 6 v9
He was really emotional about the work we had done this last couple of weeks and he was moved to tears when he finished.

I dropped the bombshell that this wasn't our final meal together so the team will have to listen to me go on again, as we will have a reunion meal to give out the photobooks in October.

The ride from Fogos to the airport was hair-raising. Evening rush hour was nuts. How there wasn't hundreds of minor accidents on the roundabouts is anyone's guess. The police are there to direct traffic as best they can but lanes don't really exist at this point and there are vehicles flying around in every direction. I don't fancy driving in those conditions ever!

We got to the airport and said our final teary goodbyes to the drivers and then went through to check-in for our flights home.

I will write about the final part of our journey tomorrow once I have slept!
